State List

The States list is used to generate the drop–down list that customers select their state in the Ship To, Bill To, and Tax screens of your store. By default, the list includes all 50 U.S. states, plus the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.), and an "Outside US" item.

Using the States List

If you ship to a limited area, you might want to only show those states you serve. If you sell live plants and only deliver within a 500-mile radius, you can edit the States list to only include the states where you do business.

If your business is in another country you might want to remove all the U.S. states and instead list the states or provinces where you do business.

Create, Edit, or Remove a State

To create a new state click Add State near the top-right corner of the States list.

To edit the code or name for an existing state click Edit Here along the right side of the list.

To remove states from the list select the check boxes next to the appropriate states then click Update.

The Default Uncoded "Outside US" Item

The first item, "Outside US", does not have a state code. This will appear at the top of each drop–down list where the user selects a state. When it is selected, no state code will be recorded.

You can rename this uncoded listing as anything you like, like "Please Select a State...". Do not specify a code (leave the Code field blank) when you edit it. Your new wording will now appear at the top of each pull-down list where a user selects a state.

Do Not Remove This Uncoded Item from the States List

It is important that you keep this item with no state code, to serve as a harmless default. If you remove this item from the list, and a customer forgets to select their state, Alaska (or whatever state is now first in your States list) will be recorded as their state.

If you do accidentally delete the "Outside US" entry, you can easily recreate it. The only thing special about the "Outside US" item is that it does not have a code – just a state name.  The lack of a code is what makes it appear at the top of the list. All you have to do is create a new "state" with no code.  You can call it "Outside US", or "Select your state" — whatever you like — just do not enter a code for it.
